I love Star Wars. I was introduced to it as a little kid by my dad, because he loved watching it when he was a kid. It became one of my favorite movie franchises of all time, and I still get excited when I hear new Star Wars news.
The Star Wars universe is so cool, and there are so many characters and props that have become cultural icons. One of those cultural icons is the lightsaber.
In honor of May 4th this year (May the fourth be with you,) I decided to Google some Star Wars crafts to try my hand at. That’s when I found these lightsaber necklaces.
These little guys look just like the iconic Star Wars lightsaber, are super easy to make, and are the perfect gift for any Star Wars nerd in your life.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Cocktail sticks
- Polymer clay
- Nail polish/acrylic paint, whatever paint you have in silver, black, red, and clear for a sealant
- Toothpick
- Glue
- Chain or cord
- Jumper rings & clasps
First, cut your cocktail sticks to create the blade of your lightsaber. Use sandpaper or a nail file to get rid of any jagged pieces of plastic.
Then, form your polymer clay into the handle. This will be a rounded cylinder shape. Stick the cocktail stick into one of the ends of the clay and make sure it fits securely. Make two additional holes on the sides if you’re making Kylo Ren’s lightsaber.
Then, use a toothpick to make a hole for the chain/cord. Take the cocktail stick and toothpick out of the clay and bake it according to package directions.
Once it’s baked, you can use your paint of choice to decorate the handle and make it look identical to the movie props: silver handle, black stripe, and a red button.
Glue your cocktail stick(s) into your hole(s). Once that’s dry, you can string your pendant(s) on to your chain or cord, add your jump rings/clasps, and your necklace is done!
I’m planning on making one of these for my best friend. She’s a huge Star Wars fan and I know she’ll love it. Let me know how yours turns out and share this with your friends so the force can be with them, too! Happy May 4th!
