How to Make Glue at Home

Picture of Make your own glue
Want to learn how to make glue at home? It is not hard, and the process is super interesting to watch. Follow this tutorial with step by step instructions and you will soon have your very own homemade glue. I especially like to use this paste for large projects when I do not want to buy a ton of glue. Much cheaper and cool idea.

Here is the DIY Glue Recipe

Step 1:

If you’ve got a big paper pasting project going on (large group collage project, science fair display poster, etc) it is much easier and cheaper to cook this up rather than use white glue or rubber cement.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup wheat flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 cup water
1/2 tsp alum powder (optional preservative — not necessary if the glue is for immediate use)

Mix flour and sugar. Gradually add water while stirring vigorously to prevent lumps.
Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, till the paste is clear. Remove from heat and stir in the optional alum.

Spread over paper or cardboard with a paintbrush. Press and smooth paper to be glued before the paste dries.

Store in a covered glass jar. This will keep for several weeks without refrigeration.

Cool Rainbow Bubble Snakes

Rainbow Bubble Snakes

Start by cutting the bottom of the water bottle off.  Next slide the sock over the bottom of the bottle.  We used colorful duct tape to secure our sock, but you could use a rubber band as well.  I love how quick and easy it was to make.  My kids love making things from our recycling.  Last summer they made their own sprinkler using some of the same materials and it is still the sprinkler of choice.

Bubble Snakes

Pour some dish soap into a shallow container with a little bit of water and gently mix.  Dip the sock covered bubble blower into the solution and gently blow.

We decided to add some color to the bubble snakes with food coloring.  The kids dropped the food coloring onto the sock covered end.

How To Make A Cool Penny Battery

This is a really cool instructable that shows you how to make a battery from pennies.
It really works!

Here’s How to Make a Penny Battery:

Okay, so I’ve looked around for an idea for an instructable. And I found one that I want to do my own rendition of, the penny battery. So this idea is not completely original, I’m not claiming it as mine. I’m just using the materials and methods that I think will be the most effective. My hope is to power and LED light or a small fan if possible. But if I make the led die, then I have sufficiently surpassed my expectations. Let’s get started.
Penny Battery Tutorial and Instructions

Step 1: Materials

These are all the things you will need. I will include my list as well as some substitutes that I’ve seen.

5-7 Pennies
Paper towels (I used shop towels, but I’ve seen everything from cardboard to cloth)
Lemon juice (salt or vinegar works too)
Sand paper
Tape-recommended
LED

Tutorial & Instructions

Step 2: Sand pennies

Take the sand paper and sand one side of each penny down til the copper is off that side and the zinc core is showing. Best method is to use your finger to move the penny on the sandpaper as far as I know. (Technically defacing currency is a federal offense or something like that, but I’m sure you won’t get arrested over 6 cents. Besides, it’s recycling so shut up.)

Step 3: Make lemon juice solution

Picture of Make lemon juice solution
So, from what I can tell others have used salt water, vinegar water, well I’m gunna use lemon water. Lemons are more acidic than vinegar so I’m hoping it’ll work better. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. But I will use 3/4 lemon juice, and maybe put some salt in for good measure.
